Well, since you asked… I’ve always had a fascination with words, and for a good while there has been one that has stuck in my mind, that I never really had reason to use on a daily basis:
Concatenation
a series of interconnected things, or the act of linking things together in a series
People who code, or who use spreadsheets a lot, will have come across this word more than the rest of us, but it resonated with me.
Perhaps not unrelated to being autistic and having ADHD, I find myself constantly in a world of interconnected things, where no one topic stands alone.
I qualified as an IT and e-commerce lawyer in the early 2000s, but I wasn’t just interested in IT and e-commerce – how could you be, without understanding data, and where that’s flowing? And once you understand data protection, information law more broadly is only a short step away. Special categories of data lead you into protected characteristics, and suddenly you’re in employment law.
I’ve always tried not to stray too far from commercial law, but I’ve also always felt that this more holistic view (of the problems my clients face, and how the world actually works) was a strength, even when I was encouraged to focus more narrowly on my specialisms (which I also have, alongside this general oversight). One link leads to another, and I continue to be curious as the chain gets longer.
And so Concatena was born
